Good book on sports nutrition

Following on from the discussion last night on nutrition, the benefits of fruit and veg (Doug!) and the terrors of creatine, I thought you might all be interested in the following book. Nutrition for Serious Athletes, I have a loaner copy if anyone wants to have a look at it.

It goes through how your body breaks down and uses different types of food, hydration, supplements and sample diet plans covering different calorific intakes, different sport-specific needs and how to structure diets for the run up to competitions or fit into cyclical training patterns. Well worth a look at.

Thin-slicing - knowing what to do without working it out

Just read the book ‘Blink’ by Malcolm Gladwell. It’s about something called thin-slicing, an intuitive technique we use to make snap decisions without overthinking.

This goes hand-in-hand with Gavin de Becker’s outstanding book ‘The Gift of Fear’ looking at how intuitive responses to microscopic cues allow us to make very accurate predictions even under high stress.

From a self-defence perspective this is massively useful as a skill that enables you to read someone’s intentions from very little information. From a training standpoint it is the key to the perfect counter punch. One that is ‘felt’ not ‘spotted’.

So what is thin-slicing

Thin slicing is our ability to judge a situation from a very small amount of information, using key factors to make a spontaneous decision without weighing all the information over a period of time. This works contrary to the common belief that more info is better, instead putting weight on the bare minimum you need to make a decision.

The book shows the power of this method of insight but also explores the drawbacks to it, specifically the introduction of stereotype and prejudice throwing your results off.

It’s an interesting read.

Stress management / wellbeing session

Hey everyone. I'd like some feedback on a session I'm putting together under the Revolution Lifestyle banner. This would sit alongside our normal classes but would place much less emphasis on the martial arts curriculum and concentrate instead on the following:

  • the positive physical and mental benefits of exercise
  • developing cardio-vascular fitness for health and weight-control
  • developing body awareness, balance, control and co-ordination
  • developing a self-coaching and performance-based mindset, understand change and set goals in all aspects of your life
  • relaxation exercises and developing practices to help you stay relaxed outside of the class

This session would run on a Friday and would help people to shift gears between the week and the weekend with a session that will allow clients to get any tension, frustration and stress out of their system before relaxing and getting themselves ready to enjoy the weekend.

If you know anyone who would benefit from a session like this, particularly colleagues and family, I think this session will be an excellent addition to our programme offering.
