Defence first
We were discussing last night the importance of defence first… whatever you are working. You can have the strongest offensive game in the world but without good defence it’ll be difficult for you to apply it.
Whether working standup or ground, a sloppy defensive game will leave you open to decisive finishes. Concentrate on keeping everything locked down and tight so you are using structure and solidity to keep yourself safe rather than strength, speed and luck.
From this stronghold you can test with your offence, Working with a skirmish mentality, working to break down your opponent with guile and craft rather than all out assault.
Playing safely without playing safe is the key. When your small attacks expose a weakness you need to be able to respond to that immediately, without recklessly throwing your defence away. Turn up the pressure but keep it tight. Too many people throw caution to the wind at the first sign off victory and leave themselves open for counter-attacks or baiting tactics.
Alongside this, defence first as an idea allows you to remain comfortable. You know you are safe and can handle the pressure no matter where the match goes. When you're comfortable, you learn. When you're not, you don't. Keep safe, keep progressing.

I find that working out defensive stuff can be as satisfying as pulling off new subs. Especially if your opponent if your opponent is skillful enough to counter your escape attempts. Im currently working on leglock escapes (my achilles heel as it were) and enjoy it when i know that 'game' is about to begin.
